VDOE’s “Every Student Succeeds Act” Survey

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is asking for feedback about Virginia’s plan to implement the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015. ESSA provides states with flexibility to improve accountability systems and overall approaches to school improvement. School accountability systems evaluate schools based on multiple factors and provide important information to school administrators, teachers, parents, and the community about school performance. The purpose of this survey is to identify those factors, also referred to accountability indicators, that you think are important to know about schools. This survey should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete and your answers are anonymous. Thank you for your feedback.

CHS Students Win At Virginia State Beta Club Leadership Summit

On October 6-7, 2016, 18 members of the Caroline High School Senior Beta Club joined over 100 other members from all over the state for the Virginia Beta Club Leadership Summit. Held at the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, the summit not only aided the Betas in developing stronger leadership skills, but also afforded them the opportunity to demonstrate how well they worked together to solve short and long term problems. Each club was allowed to submit a team in the Rapid Response Challenge as well as the Service Snapshot.

In the Rapid Response Challenge, teams of 5-8 students must work collaboratively in order to solve a problem using given materials in a limited amount of time. They are scored on creativity, collaboration, communication and critical thinking.

In the Service Snapshot, club members find a need in their community and develop a community service project that addresses that need. A team of 2-4 members presented the club’s plan to the judges. The projects were scored on creativity of service project, collaboration of club, communication of ideas and presentation skills. For their project, the CHS Beta Club chose to assist a local family whose five year old daughter has cancer. The students developed a plan that includes several fundraisers to help with medical bills.

Both CHS Beta teams achieved Mastery status in their category and advanced to their respective competitions this summer at the National Senior Beta Club Convention in Orlando, Florida.
