In celebration of the roll out of the new Caroline County Public School’s Strategic Plan, Pathways 2022, CCPS is launching “October Outreach: Project 22.”
The Strategic Plan includes a goal for School and Community Relationships which fosters the involvement of families in the education of their students. The October initiative strives to highlight ways the schools and community can work together.
“October Outreach” will highlight ways parents and students can contribute to the community through volunteerism and generosity. Each student, teacher, family, and community member/business partner is asked to log 22 acts of kindness and/or participation. A kick-off video will be shared with students and faculty, and each student will receive a flyer listing 22 ideas for contribution. Students are encouraged to return the flyer listing their personal choice of volunteerism to his/her school by November 3, 2017.
As October nears, ask yourself how YOU could support the schools and community. Could you read to a child for 22 minutes? Could your pantry spare 22 canned goods for a Caroline food bank? Could you spare 22 minutes to attend a school sporting event? Could you write 22 notes of encouragement? No act of kindness is too small. In the spirit of Pathways 2022, support your school and community!

CCPS is excited to partner with the Caroline Education Foundation to offer teachers/educators the opportunity to apply for a CEF Innovation Grant. A total of $3,500 in funding is available for the 2017-2018 school year. Innovation Grants encourage and reward creative instructional approaches supportive of college and career readiness, technology integration, critical thinking/problem solving, STEM/STEAM, project based learning, cross-curricular literacy, student leadership/collaboration, etc.

Iniciativa Folclorica Costarricence (IFC) is a folkloric group dedicated to promoting Costa Rica’s traditions, and culture in the USA. The group began dancing as a family in 2013, today it has 20 members from different Hispanic heritage of all ages. It has represented Costa Rica’s traditional dance, and Masquerade shows in several international festivals along the east coast, to name a few; Passport DC, The United Nations, Organization of American States (OAS), and they are the Cultural Attache for the Costa Rican Embassy in Washington, DC.

On Wednesday, September 13, 2017, The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) released 2017-2018 school accreditation ratings, which are a reflection of student performance on Standards of Learning assessments. Schools achieve accreditation based on SOL exam pass rates. For the 2017-2018 school year, Caroline County Public Schools (CCPS) has three schools rated “Fully Accredited”, and two schools seeking the rating of “Partially Accredited: Reconstituted School” pending action by the Virginia Board of Education:
- Bowling Green ES – Seeking the rating of Partially Accredited: Reconstituted School (Pending Action by the Virginia Board of Education);
- Lewis and Clark ES – Fully Accredited;
- Madison ES – Fully Accredited;
- Caroline MS – Seeking the rating of Partially Accredited: Reconstituted School (Pending Action by the Virginia Board of Education); and
- Caroline HS – Fully Accredited.
As CCPS continues to navigate the more rigorous VDOE accountability measures, there is increasing optimism as changes in instructional practices and professional development have resulted in improved student achievement at several schools. Specifically, Madison Elementary School’s increased English (reading) performance resulted in the school earning full accreditation for the 17-18 school year. Additionally, all three CCPS elementary schools met or exceeded the accreditation benchmark in the areas of math, science, and social studies. While Bowling Green Elementary School missed the VDOE benchmark for English by 4 percentage points, the school division remains confident that a marked reduction in teacher attrition, the addition of research-based instructional programs, and the ongoing delivery of focused professional development will lead to the school’s attainment of full accreditation status.
Caroline Middle School continues to exceed the required SOL accreditation benchmark of 70% in the content areas of history and science. Despite falling short of the VDOE accreditation benchmarks in English and mathematics, the Caroline County Public School leadership team is optimistic that CMS will meet or exceed all Standards of Learning benchmarks and join Caroline High School as a fully accredited school during the 2018-2019 school year. Under new leadership, Caroline Middle has embraced new educational programs and embedded an intervention/enrichment block into the daily schedule to positively impact teaching and learning.

Caroline Public Schools is very excited to implement a new writing program in grades kindergarten through grade 8 in its 2017-18 school year. Teachers met at the end of the school year to review several writing programs and chose the Lucy Calkins: Units of Study in Writing program to implement as a part of the balanced literacy program. During the summer, K-8 English-Language Arts teachers participated in professional develop led by highly qualified nationally certified presenters from the Teacher’s College of Columbia University.
The Lucy Calkins, Units of Study Writing program was developed through more than three decades of research and work by Lucy Calkins and her colleagues and is used with success in numerous Virginia school districts, as well as divisions across the country. Units of Study provides a thorough curriculum to help teach opinion, information, and narrative writing with increasing complexity to meet and exceed Virginia’s Standards of Learning in writing. The program fosters high level thinking and includes regular opportunities to synthesize, analyze, and critique writing. It offers tools to conduct strategic writing performance assessment to help monitor student progress and differentiate instruction. Units of Study provides exemplar texts that model writing objectives in all grades and encourages teachers to support students’ independence and fluency in writing while conferring with students individually to provide on-going feedback.
Students are getting acclimated to the program as they work in their K-8 writing folders donated by Caroline County business partners: Grand Canyon University, Best Promotional Products and Apparel, and Horace Mann. Students “publish” and share their work on a regular basis and are motivated to read the work of their peers in hallways all over their schools. If you have an elementary or middle school student attending a Caroline County Public School, there is no doubt that you will read and be impressed with his/her writing during your parent teacher conference.
Teachers are excited about the structure of the program and how it is organized to guide writing instruction from teacher to teacher and year to year. Mrs. Tamara Feggans, a teacher at Bowling Green Elementary School stated, “I appreciate that CCPS chose a program that will serve students from kindergarten through grade 8 so that each grade builds on learned skills as opposed to several different programs with no continuity.” She also shared, “Lucy Calkins Units of Study really taps into the student’s inner writer and gets them excited about writing every day!”
Dr. Joanne Jones, Director of Curriculum and Instruction emphasizes that Lucy Calkins Units of Study provides teachers with direct and explicit structures for teaching writing. “We are eager to implement this program because we know that our students will become better writers which will also promote better readers and learners to encourage college and career readiness. The CCPS Instructional Team is committed to making this program successful by providing on-going professional development and guiding our teachers and administrators through the process of learning and implementing best practices in writing that this program fosters.
