MES Jr Beta Club had 12 students qualify for Nationals in Oklahoma City, OK with 9 participating. Zoe Kitchen competed in Visual Arts with a beautiful handmade dream catcher choker necklace. We had a group of 4 students Adrian Salas,Brayden Perry,Allyson Hoover and Riley Funk that competed in the Quiz Bowl. The students had to collaborate as a team in taking a quiz while going against other Elementary schools. Our last competition was our Robotics Team. Kyler Hall,Nathan Vontomaszewski, Lee Carty, Judiah Hogan designed a recycled obstacle course using a robot with added recycled parts that emptied a can into a box that represented a recycling bin. This was entirely student led without any help from teachers or parents. They were judged in areas such as their performance, collaboration and creativity. The Robotics team placed 6th out of approximately 22 other schools.
The students displayed great character and showed great responsibility while proudly representing MES being so far away from home. During some of our down time we were able to take in some history by riding a water taxi through a canal and learning some of the history in OKC. The highlight of our entertainment was visiting the Oklahoma City Bombing memorial and museum. When asking the students of their favorite highlight of the trip they all agreed in saying this museum. What a very important part of history that our students were able to learn about in person not just reading in a textbook.
