During the period 3-19 December 2012, the cadets planned and conducted a very successful service learning project. They considered numerous projects to assist organizations inside and outside the community. After discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each project, they decided to dedicate their efforts to helping needy children in the community. They named their project, “Operation Shoebox.”
The cadets partnered with the Caroline County Department of Social Services and set a goal to collect 100 presents for girls and boys ages 3-12.
In short order, the nicely wrapped shoeboxes started to appear under the corps’ Christmas Tree. When the deadline arrived, a total of 133 presents were collected…a new corps record! On December 20th, Cadet LTC Dan LeClair, the Battalion Commander, Cadet Major Asya Jones, the Battalion Executive Officer, and Cadet Command Sergeant Major Dakota Johnson delivered the presents to the Caroline County Department of Social Services. Social Services was most grateful and thanked the corps-of-cadets for their thoughtfulness and generosity.
LTC Pyner, the cadet’s Senior Army Instructor, said “the cadets who participated demonstrated a collective feeling of self-satisfaction in that they all felt that they had identified a community need, came up with a plan to help, and then executed that plan which contributed to many children having a brighter Christmas 2012.” LTC Pyner and MSG Payne, the cadet’s military instructors, would like to thank all the cadets and parents who contributed and helped make this project a success.

At the present time two school days have been missed this year due to inclement weather conditions on October 29 and 30, 2012. Since the scheduled make-up days do not occur until after the end of the first semester, the Caroline County School Board made the following adjustments to the 2012-2013 School Calendar to “add” the days back into the first semester:
- January 28 and 29, 2013 will be regular school days and January 30, 2013 will be the last day of the semester.
- The student holidays/teacher workdays will be on January 31 and February 1, 2013.
If you have any questions, please contact the principal of your child’s school.
